Cricket fans across India are waiting for the IPL 2026 schedule. Usually, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) releases the full list of matches at once. This year, the board plans to announce the dates in two separate phases. There are a few important reasons for this change.
The Impact of Elections
The main reason for the delay is the upcoming state elections. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam will hold assembly elections during the same months as the IPL. Managing a cricket match requires thousands of police officers for security and crowd control.
Since these officers will be busy with election duties, they cannot guard the stadiums simultaneously. The BCCI needs to wait for the final election dates from the government before it can pick match dates for cities like Kolkata and Chennai.
Stadium Availability
Another factor is the T20 World Cup, which ends just weeks before the IPL starts. Many major stadiums are currently hosting World Cup matches. These venues need time to fix the grass and prepare the pitches for the IPL. Ground staff also need time to set up new branding and equipment for the different teams. By releasing the schedule in two parts, the BCCI gives these venues more time to get ready.

What This Means for Fans
The first part of the schedule will likely include the first 20 to 25 matches. Fans can expect this list by the end of February. The second part, which includes the rest of the league games and the playoffs, should arrive in mid-March.
The tournament itself will still take place from late March to late May. Some teams may have to play their home games at other venues if their local stadiums are busy due to elections. For example, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings might move some games to other cities. Even with these changes, fans can still look forward to a full season of exciting cricket.
