The Indian Premier League debuted in 2008, and honestly, it’s become a massive deal in cricket. Every team has some heavyweight backing big business tycoons, celebrities, or huge companies pulling the strings. Their cash, brains, and plans for the future shape how each team runs.

Fast forward to 2025, and Royal Challengers Bangalore finally broke through. They won their first IPL trophy. United Spirits (Diageo) still owns RCB for now, but the franchise is deep in a strategic review that should wrap up by March 31, 2026.

After RCB’s big win in 2025, billionaire Adar Poonawalla, who runs the Serum Institute, announced on January 22, 2026, that he’s putting in a big bid for the team. He’s calling it “strong and competitive,” and it’s worth around $2 billion.

This table lists the names of IPL team owners, their companies, their net worth, and the year they purchased their teams. Some teams have famous personalities as owners, while others have major corporations backing them.

1. Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians started out in 2008, backed by Mukesh Ambani and his wife, Nita, through Reliance Industries. With that kind of support, they’ve always had the resources to chase big dreams. And honestly, it shows. Mumbai has become one of the IPL’s heavyweights, lifting the trophy five times: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

But it’s not just about money. These guys have a real eye for young talent. They find promising players, give them a shot, and before you know it, they’re stars. That mix of smart scouting and deep pockets? It’s why Mumbai Indians keep coming back strong, year after year.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB kicked off back in 2008 with Vijay Mallya at the helm. Things shifted in 2016 when Diageo acquired United Spirits and, by extension, RCB. Now, Diageo runs the show completely. Heading into the 2025 season, they’re still calling the shots, but there’s a buzz that things might shake up soon. Diageo’s already exploring its next move ahead of the 2026 IPL cycle.

Lately, there’s been talk that Hombale Films, the team behind KGF and Kantara, is close to securing a minority stake in RCB. Nothing’s locked in just yet, but people expect the deal could land by March 31, 2026. If that happens, RCB gains a strong local partner in Bengaluru, while Diageo retains its position at the top.

3. Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings jumped into the IPL in 2008. India Cements owns the team, and N. Srinivasan runs the show. Honestly, they’ve built a habit of turning up strong every season. It pays off that they’ve grabbed the IPL trophy five times: 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

By 2025, CSK isn’t just another team; they’re the richest in the league. That comes down to their huge brand, loyal fans, and sharp moves both on and off the field. Sure, they hit a rough patch when the league banned them for two years (2016 and 2017). But they didn’t stay down for long. CSK came back swinging and proved they’re still one of the IPL’s toughest sides.

4. Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad took over from the Deccan Chargers in 2012. Kalanithi Maran and his daughter, Kavya Maran, own the team and call the shots through Sun TV Network.

People remember SRH for their tough bowling lineup. In 2016, they won their first IPL title.

5. Delhi Capitals

Sajjan Jindal and Parth Jindal, from the GMR and JSW Groups, co-own the Delhi Capitals. The team started back in 2008. Sure, they haven’t won the IPL yet, but you can’t miss the way they’ve stepped up in recent years.

They reached their first final in 2020 and have made the playoffs ever since. The real draw that it’s how they blend experienced international players with young Indian talent. Honestly, things are looking up for them.

6. Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings entered the IPL in 2008, owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul. The team’s always had big stars and owners who love the limelight, but they’ve only reached the final twice, once in 2014 and again in 2025. They’re one of the original eight teams, yet that championship keeps slipping away.

Both times they made the final, it ended in heartbreak. They’ve shaken things up over the years, even tried a new look recently, but the hunt for their first IPL trophy just keeps going. Every season, hope kicks in all over again. Maybe next time.

7. Kolkata Knight Riders

Ever since the IPL started in 2008, the Kolkata Knight Riders KKR, if you’re a fan, have been a total hit with the crowd. Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar, owns them, along with Juhi Chawla and her husband, Jay Mehta. They acquired the team for approximately ₹2.98 billion, with Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Jay Mehta’s company.

KKR fans are seriously loyal. The team’s management? Always sharp, always thinking a step ahead. KKR doesn’t just show up to play; they fight hard and keep making the playoffs. And those big moments, you can’t ignore them. KKR grabbed the IPL trophy three times: in 2012, 2014, and, most recently, 2024. Gautam Gambhir was the leader every time.

8. Rajasthan Royals

The Rajasthan Royals won the first IPL trophy in 2008. These days, Manoj Badale’s Media IPL Ltd calls most of the shots for the team. Things took a turn in 2015, when they received a two-year suspension. But when 2018 rolled around, the Royals came charging back.

People love the Royals because they’re always hunting for fresh talent and actually give youngsters a real shot. Sure, their budget’s never the biggest, but somehow they keep pulling off surprises. That 2008 win, led by Shane Warne, remains one of the greatest underdog stories in IPL history.

9. Gujarat Titans

The Gujarat Titans entered the IPL in 2022 and instantly drew everyone’s attention. With CVC Capital Partners backing them and Hardik Pandya leading the way, they stormed through the competition and grabbed the trophy in their debut season.

That’s a huge statement. From day one, you could tell they built the team right and had a plan that worked. The Titans didn’t show up just to fill out the roster; they showed up to win.

10. Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants entered the IPL in 2022, right when the league expanded to 10 teams. They’re owned by Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group, the same folks behind the old Rising Pune Supergiant.

Lucknow hit the ground running in their debut season, charging straight into the playoffs. With a mix of experienced international players and some really promising Indian talent, the Super Giants feel like a team that’s here to stay. You just get the sense they’re always in the mix.

The Builders of Glory: How Owners Drive the IPL

The IPL isn’t just about edge-of-your-seat matches. It’s also about the folks running the show behind the scenes, the team owners. Their money, decisions, and leadership basically decide how every franchise feels and functions, both on and off the field. They build strong teams, take risks, and keep fans coming back season after season. Without them, the IPL wouldn’t have become the giant it is now.

Look at RCB. For years, fans waited and waited, and then finally, in 2025, they walked away with their first IPL trophy. That victory didn’t just fall into their laps. It took real vision, patience, and a stubborn drive from the owners to get there. Moments like that make it clear—owners shape the league in a big way.

As the IPL continues to evolve, you can count on these owners to keep driving its excitement and growth.
