The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin on March 28, 2026.

In a highly anticipated return, the opening match will be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the home of the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Tournament Highlights

The 2026 season is set to be the biggest one yet, featuring a total of 84 matches. While the tournament was originally planned to start on March 26, the date was moved back by two days to better align with the weekend.

Key Schedule Details:

  • Opening Match: March 28, 2026 (Bengaluru)
  • League Phase: March – May
  • Grand Final: May 31, 2026 (Bengaluru)

Bengaluru Returns As A Host City

After extensive safety upgrades following a crowd incident during last year’s victory celebrations, the Karnataka government has cleared the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to host major events.

As the reigning champions, RCB will play five of their seven home games in Bengaluru. Due to existing commitments, their remaining two “home” fixtures will be played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. To ensure a safe environment for fans, stadium attendance will be capped at 35,000 people per match.

Two-Phase Schedule Release

Because of upcoming state elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, the BCCI is releasing the schedule in two parts. This ensures that match security does not interfere with election polling.

  • Phase 1: The schedule for the first 14 days is expected to be announced by March 7.
  • Phase 2: The remaining fixtures will be finalized once the Election Commission confirms the voting dates.

Conclusion: A Season of High Expectations

As the first-time defending champions, all eyes will be on Royal Challengers Bengaluru to see if they can maintain their title on home soil. With more matches than ever before and the return of a full-capacity atmosphere in Bengaluru, IPL 2026 is shaping up to be a historic chapter in Indian cricket.

Fans can expect the official match-by-match fixtures for the opening weeks to be released within the next 48 hours.
