Every IPL season brings massive excitement across India. Millions of fans watch matches, support their favorite teams, and discuss player performances. Many people also want to place bets on match outcomes. Online platforms and apps make betting look simple and convenient. However, just because something is easy to access doesn’t make it legal.

The truth is that IPL betting remains illegal across most of India. No national law clearly allows sports betting. As of 2026, the legal “gray area” has ended; India now operates under a strict central framework that prohibits all online money-based games.

A handful of states permit certain forms of gambling but even these are now heavily restricted by the National Online Gaming Authority (NOGA). Fantasy sports platforms have been forced to remove real-money formats to comply with the new national ban.

This article covers the legal status of IPL betting in India, explains why the laws have become stricter, shows how state regulations vary, and highlights the risks people face when using betting platforms.

What the Law Says About IPL Betting

The Public Gambling Act of 1867 serves as India’s primary gambling legislation. This law prohibits gambling in public places. Since the law dates back to the 1800s, it never mentioned online betting or sports wagering. The internet didn’t exist at the time. This gap created years of confusion about whether online IPL betting was legal.

In 2025, the government introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA). This law established national rules for online gaming. The legislation makes clear that all online “money games” involving financial stakes are prohibited, regardless of whether they are based on skill or chance. Any game in which you stake money on outcomes counts as restricted.

National law prohibits betting on IPL matches.

State-Wise Rules for IPL Betting

Indian states regulate gambling and betting independently. Each state writes its own laws.

Some states prohibit all forms of betting and gambling. Others permit limited activities, such as casinos or horse racing, under strict licensing. Many states prohibit online betting under state gaming laws.

If your state bans betting, participating in IPL betting can result in penalties under state law. This applies to both online and offline betting. Additionally, the Central Government now uses Section 69A of the IT Act to block thousands of offshore betting domains nationwide.

Betting vs Fantasy Sports

Indian courts previously held that certain fantasy sports platforms relied on skill rather than chance. Users built teams and scored points based on player performance. Courts treated these platforms differently from traditional betting.

The 2025 online gaming law changed this landscape. The new law classifies real-money games with wagers as prohibited activities any online game involving a monetary stake as an “online money game,” which is now banned. Fantasy platforms like Dream11 have largely transitioned to “free-to-play” models with non-cash rewards to avoid being classified as illegal gambling.

Betting on match outcomes still constitutes gambling. It does not count as a “game of skill.”

What You Should Know Before Participating

Before joining any IPL betting activity, you should:

Check your state’s gambling laws carefully. Understand that national law restricts real-money betting. Avoid offshore apps operating without Indian regulation. Know the difference between legal online games and illegal betting activities.

Conclusion: In India, Betting On IPL Matches Is Illegal

IPL betting is not legal in India. The Public Gambling Act and the 2025 Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act both clearly state that real-money betting and wagering are banned entirely in the online space.

No government-approved IPL betting apps operate legally in India. Betting on IPL games carries genuine legal risks, including criminal prosecution and the loss of funds through payment gateway blocks.

Until India reforms its laws and establishes a regulated sports betting system, placing wagers on IPL matches remains illegal in nearly the entire country.
