The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officially received the Karnataka government’s approval to host IPL 2026 matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Home Minister G. Parameshwara gave the final nod on Monday, March 16, ending months of uncertainty. As a result, defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will now open IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at their home ground.

Why Did Chinnaswamy Stadium Need Government Clearance?

The stadium faced a ban after the tragic stampede on June 4, 2025, that killed 11 fans during RCB’s IPL 2025 title celebration. Following this, the government set up the Justice D’Cunha Committee to conduct a thorough safety and structural audit.

Consequently, the KSCA had a strict March 15 deadline to complete all short-term safety upgrades recommended by the committee. The government then appointed an expert committee led by G. Maheshwar Rao, which inspected the venue on March 13 before giving its seal of approval.

What Safety Upgrades Did KSCA Make?

The KSCA carried out extensive renovations starting December 2025, right after former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad took charge as president.

Here’s what changed at the venue:

  • Six new entry gates constructed around the stadium
  • Existing gates widened to handle larger crowds
  • New walkways and a holding area built near the old NCA facility
  • Dedicated entry and exit routes created for emergency services
  • QR code-based ticket scanning introduced to prevent overcrowding at box offices
  • Ongoing coordination with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation for better crowd management

How Many IPL 2026 Matches Will Chinnaswamy Host?

In total, the Chinnaswamy Stadium will host seven IPL 2026 matches. That includes five RCB home games, one playoff, and most importantly, the IPL 2026 final.

For the first phase, RCB plays two home games. They face SRH on March 28 in the season opener, followed by Chennai Super Kings on April 5. Additionally, the venue will host the RCB Unboxing event and the IPL 2026 opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, RCB will play their remaining two home games at Raipur’s Shaheed Veer Narayan Stadium. So Chinnaswamy is back, and this time, it’s ready for a full house.
