Wankhede Stadium sits in the Churchgate area of Mumbai, just a short walk from Marine Drive. The Mumbai Cricket Association built this ground in 1974, and it quickly grew into one of India’s most important cricket venues. Today, it holds around 33,108 fans after renovations ahead of the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Cricket fans around the world know Wankhede for two reasons. First, India won the 2011 ODI World Cup Final here. Second, it serves as the home ground of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Since the very first IPL season in 2008, Wankhede has hosted more matches than any other ground in the tournament. The total count now stands at 125 IPL games.

The ground has short boundaries, a flat pitch, and a fast outfield. Batters love these conditions. But the sea breeze also helps swing bowlers, especially during the early overs and under lights. Dew often plays a role in the second innings, giving chasing teams a slight edge. In fact, teams batting second have won more often here than teams batting first.

Why Wankhede Stands Out In The IPL?

Several factors make Wankhede a unique IPL venue. The ground sits close to the Arabian Sea, and the evening breeze affects ball movement. The pitch tends to stay true for batting, but smart bowlers can use the conditions under lights.

The crowd at Wankhede adds another layer to the experience. Mumbai fans are passionate and loud. They fill the 33,000-seat stadium for almost every IPL game. The energy in the stands pushes players to perform at their best.

Wankhede also became the first ground to host 100 IPL matches back in 2022. That milestone shows how central this venue is to the IPL’s identity. With 125 matches and counting, it continues to lead all other grounds in match count.
