A BJP office-bearer was among six people arrested for running an illegal IPL 2026 betting racket in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The Special Operations Group (SOG) and Sadar police conducted a joint raid at Shiv Dham Colony near Gokul Barrage, catching all six accused red-handed while placing bets on live IPL matches.

Police seized cash worth lakhs, multiple mobile phones, and other equipment used to operate the betting network.

How Did Police Bust the Racket?

The arrest came after the SOG received a tip-off about an active betting operation running from a residential location in Shiv Dham Colony. Officers moved quickly, raiding the premises during a live IPL 2026 match.

All six accused were caught in the act. They were using mobile phones and online platforms to place and manage bets in real time. According to police, the network had been active since the start of the IPL season and had already processed significant sums of money.

The involvement of a ruling party office-bearer among the arrested has created a stir in Mathura’s political circles. Police haven’t disclosed the specific designation of the BJP leader yet, but the arrest has drawn considerable local attention.

What Was Seized During the Raid?

Officers recovered the following from the spot:

  • Cash worth lakhs of rupees
  • Multiple mobile phones used for placing and coordinating bets
  • Notebooks and registers containing betting records and transaction details

The seized materials suggest the operation wasn’t small-time. The accused were allegedly running an organised network that accepted bets on match outcomes, session runs, and ball-by-ball predictions during live IPL games.

Is This Part of a Wider IPL Betting Crackdown?

Absolutely. This arrest fits into a growing pattern of IPL betting busts across India since the tournament started on March 28.

In Telangana, police arrested 10 people in Adilabad on the opening day itself. Hyderabad Police have blocked over 600 betting-related links in the past month. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested six individuals running an online betting operation from a rented apartment in Memnagar.

Across Andhra Pradesh, police busted a mega inter-state betting racket in Narasaraopet, arresting six more. And in Aligarh, UP, police uncovered a high-tech mobile app-based betting network with estimated daily turnover of ₹2-3 crore.

Every IPL season triggers this surge. Despite Telangana’s 2017 ban on betting apps and Parliament’s 2025 Online Gaming Act, the platforms keep evolving. Operators now run through WhatsApp, Telegram, and encrypted apps, making detection harder for local police.

What Should Fans Know?

The message from law enforcement across states remains the same. No one can predict IPL results. Anyone claiming otherwise is trying to take your money.

If you encounter suspicious betting promotions, dial 1930 or report through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. In UP, local police helplines are also active throughout the IPL season.

The Mathura arrest proves that betting networks don’t discriminate by profession or political affiliation. When the stakes are high, anyone can get caught in the net. Sometimes literally.
