PSL 2026 captains list features Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, David Warner, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Saud Shakeel, Ashton Turner, and Marnus Labuschagne leading the eight franchises in this historic 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League.

For the first time, the league has expanded from six to eight teams, with Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindi Pindiz joining the mix.

The tournament runs from March 26 to May 3, 2026, featuring 44 matches across Lahore and Karachi. Here is every captain, their team, role, and what they bring to the table.

PSL 2026 Tournament Format And Schedule Overview

Understanding the format helps put each captain’s challenge in perspective. Here is a quick snapshot of how HBL PSL 11 works this season.

Additionally, all matches will be played behind closed doors, which means the captains won’t have the luxury of a roaring home crowd to boost energy.

PSL 2026 Captains List At A Glance

Before we break down each skipper in detail, here is the quick-reference table for all PSL 2026 team captains.

Notably, three of the eight captains are Australians, which shows the league’s growing global appeal.

1. Peshawar Zalmi Captain: Babar Azam

Babar Azam continues leading Peshawar Zalmi into PSL 2026. The stylish right-hander remains one of the most technically gifted batters in world cricket.

However, recent form hasn’t been kind. His T20I numbers across 2024-25 dipped compared to his golden run in 2021-22.

Still, writing off Babar would be foolish. As the saying goes, class is permanent, form is temporary.

Babar brings calm decision-making in pressure chases. On top of that, he has captained Pakistan across formats, giving him unmatched experience in the squad.

The PSL gives him the perfect platform to silence critics and rebuild his T20 credentials.

Kusal Mendis, Mohammad Haris, Aamir Jamal, Khurram Shahzad, and Aaron Hardie form the core around Babar.

Additionally, the inclusion of James Vince and Michael Bracewell adds overseas depth in both batting and spin departments.

2. Lahore Qalandars Captain: Shaheen Shah Afridi

Shaheen Shah Afridi returns as skipper of defending champions Lahore Qalandars. The left-arm quick has led the franchise to three titles in the last four PSL seasons, including PSL 2025.

That’s not a typo. Three out of four. Qalandars went from perennial underachievers to the PSL’s most dominant force.

When Shaheen gets the new ball swinging in the powerplay, it sets the tone for the entire match. His aggressive captaincy style complements the Qalandars’ fearless brand of cricket.

Meanwhile, his ability to deliver yorkers at the death makes him a captain who leads from the front, not from the sidelines.

The squad is stacked. Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Mustafizur Rahman, Abdullah Shafique, Sikandar Raza, and Usama Mir give Shaheen plenty of match-winners to work with.

Consequently, Qalandars enter PSL 11 as clear favourites to defend their crown.

3. Islamabad United Captain: Shadab Khan

Shadab Khan stays at the helm of the most successful franchise in PSL history. Islamabad United have three titles (2016, 2018, 2024), and Shadab has been instrumental in at least two of those wins.

The leg-spinning all-rounder offers something unique: he contributes with bat, ball, and sharp tactical awareness.

Shadab’s leg-spin is particularly effective in the middle overs, where he regularly breaks partnerships. As a result, United often dominate the phase between overs 7 and 15.

His lower-order hitting has also bailed the team out more than once, making him arguably the most valuable captain-player combo in the PSL.

Devon Conway, Faheem Ashraf, Imad Wasim, Mehran Mumtaz, and Mohammad Hasnain provide a solid all-round core.

Moreover, Andries Gous and Mark Chapman add overseas firepower in the batting lineup.

4. Quetta Gladiators Captain: Saud Shakeel

Saud Shakeel takes over as the new captain of Quetta Gladiators. The left-hander’s calm temperament and solid technique bring a fresh approach to a franchise that last won the title back in 2019.

Quetta have been through a rough patch in recent seasons. Consequently, the franchise clearly wanted a change in leadership direction.

Shakeel is best known for his Test exploits, but don’t underestimate his white-ball ability. His composed batting style provides an anchor role that Quetta have lacked in recent seasons.

On top of that, leading a side with experienced overseas names like Rilee Rossouw and Tom Curran could help Shakeel grow quickly as a T20 leader.

Abrar Ahmed‘s mystery spin is Quetta’s trump card. Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph, Rilee Rossouw, Spencer Johnson, and Ben McDermott add overseas quality.

5. Karachi Kings Captain: David Warner

David Warner brings his vast T20 leadership experience to Karachi Kings. The Australian left-hander has captained teams across multiple franchise leagues, including the IPL and BBL.

Karachi’s last title came in 2020, and the pressure to deliver is mounting. Warner’s appointment signals the franchise means business.

Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL 2016 title and was consistently among the top run-scorers during his time as captain. In the recent Big Bash League, he proved he still has plenty left in the tank.

As a result, Karachi fans have genuine reason to be excited about their new captain.

Moeen Ali, Adam Zampa, Hasan Ali, Azam Khan, Salman Ali Agha, and Reeza Hendricks give Warner a well-balanced squad to play with.

6. Multan Sultans Captain: Ashton Turner

Ashton Turner takes charge of the newly reconstituted Multan Sultans. The Australian middle-order batter is known for finishing games under pressure and clearing boundaries when it matters most.

The Sultans underwent a franchise overhaul after the original owners exited. CD Ventures acquired the franchise, rebranded it back to Multan Sultans after the team briefly operated as Sialkot Stallionz.

Turner’s biggest strength is his composure during death overs. He’s built a reputation in the BBL and international T20s as someone who stays calm when wickets fall around him.

Additionally, captaining a squad loaded with talent like Steve Smith and Shan Masood should make his job easier in the strategic department.

Steve Smith, Mohammad Nawaz, Tabraiz Shamsi, Peter Siddle, Shan Masood, and Sahibzada Farhan form a squad that blends experience with local firepower.

7. Rawalpindi Pindiz Captain: Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan leads the brand-new franchise Rawalpindi Pindiz into their debut PSL season. The wicketkeeper-batter brings immense experience, having captained Pakistan in T20Is previously.

However, Rizwan has been out of Pakistan’s national squad recently, with critics targeting his T20I strike rate. This PSL stint feels like a personal mission to prove doubters wrong.

Rizwan averaged over 40 in the PSL between 2021 and 2024, even if his strike rates sometimes raised eyebrows. With the Pindiz built around him, expect a more aggressive approach.

Furthermore, the franchise spent big at the auction. Naseem Shah was picked up for PKR 8.65 crore (the auction’s most expensive buy), while Daryl Mitchell went for PKR 8.05 crore.

Naseem Shah, Daryl Mitchell, Sam Billings, Mohammad Amir, Kamran Ghulam, and Rishad Hossain make this one of the strongest debut squads in PSL history.

On paper, the Pindiz look like immediate title contenders. That’s a bold claim for a new franchise, but the roster justifies it.

8. Hyderabad Kingsmen Captain: Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne is arguably the most surprising captaincy appointment of PSL 2026. The Australian is best known for those marathon Test innings, not T20 fireworks.

T20 captaincy demands quick decisions, fast bowling changes, and aggressive field placements. These are areas where Labuschagne hasn’t been tested at a professional level.

On the flip side, the Kingsmen have a squad that practically captains itself. Glenn Maxwell, Saim Ayub, and Kusal Perera bring enough T20 IQ to cover any learning curve from Labuschagne.

Glenn Maxwell (available for the second half of the season), Saim Ayub, Kusal Perera, Maheesh Theekshana, Adil Rashid, and Riley Meredith make up a Galactico roster.

Consequently, this new franchise could spring a few surprises despite the inexperienced captain tag.

What Makes PSL 2026 Different From Previous Seasons?

Several key changes set this edition apart from the previous ten. Here are the highlights that directly impact captaincy decisions.

First-Ever PSL Player Auction

The PSL 2026 auction, held on February 11, 2026, replaced the draft system used since 2016. Each franchise had a purse of PKR 45 crore (extendable to PKR 50.5 crore for one overseas direct signing).

A total of 888 players registered, and 103 were sold. This new system means captains now work with squads that are financially structured, not just talent-picked.

Expansion to Eight Teams

Hyderabad Kingsmen (owned by FKS Group) and Rawalpindi Pindiz (owned by Walee Technologies) are the two new entrants.

Meanwhile, Multan Sultans went through a fascinating ownership saga. The original owners exited, Walee Technologies bought the slot and relocated it to Rawalpindi, and then CD Ventures purchased the Sialkot franchise and rebranded it back to Multan Sultans.

Behind Closed Doors Due to Fuel Crisis

The PCB confirmed on March 22, 2026 that all matches will be played without spectators in Lahore and Karachi only. The fuel shortage, triggered by the West Asia conflict, forced this unprecedented move.

For captains, this means adapting to empty stadiums, which can affect player motivation and in-match energy levels significantly.

PSL 2026 Captains Comparison: Experience, Style, and Strengths

Here’s a breakdown of how the eight captains compare on key leadership parameters.

CaptainPSL Titles WonCaptaincy StylePrimary Strength
Babar Azam0Composed, batting-firstAnchor batting
Shaheen Afridi3 (with LQ)Aggressive, bowler-ledPowerplay dominance

Ashton Turner0 (first time)Cool under pressureDeath-overs finishing
Mohammad Rizwan0Structured, risk-averseConsistency with gloves

Shaheen and Shadab are clearly the most decorated captains in terms of PSL silverware. However, Warner’s IPL title win gives him the edge in overall franchise cricket experience.

Which PSL 2026 Captain Has the Strongest Squad?

Captaincy matters, but so does the talent at your disposal. Here’s a realistic assessment based on squad depth.

Lahore Qalandars and Rawalpindi Pindiz look the strongest heading into PSL 2026. Lahore has a proven core and championship pedigree. Rawalpindi spent the most at the auction and assembled a pace-heavy roster that could be lethal.

Meanwhile, Islamabad United shouldn’t be underestimated. Three titles prove they know how to win when it matters.

Hyderabad Kingsmen‘s squad reads like a fantasy cricket team. However, availability concerns around Glenn Maxwell (available only for the second half) could limit their early-season momentum.

Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi have balanced rosters but may depend heavily on their captains’ individual form. If Warner and Babar fire, their teams will be serious threats.

PSL 2026 Groups: Which Captains Face Each Other?

The eight teams are split into two groups. Each team plays intra-group opponents twice and inter-group opponents once, totalling 10 league matches per team.

The top four teams across both groups qualify for the playoffs, which include a Qualifier, two Eliminators, and the Final.

PSL 2026 Opening Match: Shaheen vs Labuschagne

The tournament kicks off with defending champions Lahore Qalandars facing debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on March 26, 2026.

This is a captaincy clash that perfectly sums up PSL 2026: experience versus the unknown. Shaheen’s three-time champion squad against Labuschagne’s untested but loaded debutants.

If nothing else, it guarantees a fascinating opening night for the season.

Where to Watch PSL 2026 Live?

In Pakistan, fans can catch the action on PTV Sports, Geo Super, and Ten Sports. Walee Technologies hold the broadcast and streaming rights for the season.

For Indian viewers, the broadcasting rights for India were withheld during the bidding process. Fans may need to rely on online streaming platforms for access. Official broadcast partners for India are expected to be confirmed closer to the tournament.

Conclusion: PSL 2026 Begins with 8 Captains as 2 new Teams added in this Season

The PSL 2026 captains list is a perfect blend of proven champions, global superstars, and bold experiments. From Shaheen’s title-winning pedigree to Labuschagne’s uncharted T20 captaincy, every franchise has a unique leadership story.

With the league expanding to eight teams and using an auction system for the first time, this season promises to be the most competitive in PSL history. Regardless of who lifts the trophy on May 3, the captaincy battles alone will make this one to remember.
