How the Points System Works

The Maharaja Trophy uses a standard T20 points system. Specifically, each match outcome rewards points as follows:

  • Win: 2 points
  • Tie: 1 point each
  • No Result (washout): 1 point each
  • Loss: 0 points

Furthermore, each franchise plays the other five teams twice during the league phase. Therefore, every side has 10 league fixtures and a maximum possible total of 20 points.

Playoff Qualification Rules

The top four teams at the end of the league stage advance to the playoffs. Notably, the tournament follows the IPL-style four-team knockout format.

PlayoffsDateMatchup
Eliminator9 Jul 20263rd place vs 4th place (loser eliminated)
Qualifier 19 Jul 20261st place vs 2nd place (winner to Final)
Qualifier 210 Jul 2026Qualifier 1 loser vs Eliminator winner
Final12 Jul 2026Qualifier 1 winner vs Qualifier 2 winner

Consequently, finishing in the top two gives a team two attempts to reach the final, while 3rd and 4th have only one. Therefore, league-stage NRR matters enormously when ties happen on points.

Net Run Rate Explained (The Tiebreaker)

When two teams are level on points, Net Run Rate (NRR) decides the higher position. Specifically, NRR is calculated as the team’s overall run rate scored minus the overall run rate conceded across all matches.

Formula: NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) − (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled).

For example, a team scoring 1,200 runs in 200 overs and conceding 1,000 runs in 200 overs has an NRR of (1200/200) − (1000/200) = 6.0 − 5.0 = +1.000. Additionally, when a side is bowled out before facing the full 20 overs, the full 20-over allotment counts in the denominator. This rewards quick chases and large victory margins.

Key Dates That Will Shape the 2026 Points Table

Three phase shifts will likely cause major table movement. In particular, double-headers stack daily action and can flip the leaderboard inside 24 hours.

Maharaja Trophy Points Table: All-Time Trivia

A handful of points-table records stand out across the four completed seasons. Specifically, these stats reward franchises that combine win rate with NRR dominance.

  • Most points in a single season: Bengaluru Blasters topped the 2024 league phase with 12 points from 8 games before losing the final.
  • Wooden spoon streak: Shivamogga Lions and Mangaluru Dragons have each finished bottom of the table in separate seasons (Lions in 2024, Dragons in earlier editions).
  • Biggest table climb: Mangaluru Dragons went from 2024 wooden-spoon contenders to 2025 champions inside one season, a remarkable rebuild.
  • Most consistent finalists: Hubli Tigers have reached three of the four Maharaja Trophy finals (2023, 2024, 2025) but won only once.
