TG20 League 2026 Points System Explained

Understanding how teams earn points is essential for reading the standings correctly. The TG20 League 2026 follows the standard T20 league points system used across most Indian domestic franchise tournaments.

Match ResultPoints Awarded
Win2 Points
Tie (Super Over follows)1 Point (each team)
No Result (rain/abandonment)1 Point (each team)
Loss0 Points

How Is Net Run Rate (NRR) Calculated?

Net Run Rate is the tiebreaker when two or more teams finish on equal points. Specifically, to find a team’s NRR, subtract their average runs conceded per over from the average runs scored per over.

NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) minus (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled).

For example, if a team scores 180 in 20 overs and concedes 150 in 20 overs, their NRR for that match would be (180/20) minus (150/20) = +1.500. A higher NRR generally means a team is winning games convincingly, which is why it rewards dominant performances.

Consequently, teams that chase down targets quickly or defend by large margins will build a stronger NRR across the tournament.

TG20 League 2026 Tournament Format

The TG20 League 2026 format uses a round-robin group stage followed by a four-team playoff structure.

League Stage (Matches 1 to 28)

During the league stage, each of the eight teams plays seven matches, one against every other team. As a result, the schedule features 28 league matches between 21 June and 7 July 2026.

Most match days feature two games, with the afternoon fixture starting at 2:15 PM IST and the evening fixture at 7:15 PM IST. However, a rest day on 5 July 2026 breaks the schedule before the final stretch of league games.

Playoffs (Matches 29 to 32)

After the league stage concludes on 7 July 2026, the top four teams advance to the playoffs. The TG20 League uses an IPL-style playoff format, which gives the top two teams a second chance if they lose their first playoff game.

StageTeamsOutcome
Qualifier (Match 30)1st vs 2ndWinner qualifies for Final; Loser plays 2nd Eliminator
Eliminator (Match 29)3rd vs 4thWinner plays 2nd Eliminator; Loser eliminated
2nd Eliminator (Match 31)Loser of Qualifier vs Winner of EliminatorWinner qualifies for Final; Loser eliminated
Final (Match 32)Winner of Qualifier vs Winner of 2nd EliminatorWinner crowned TG20 League 2026 Champions

Therefore, finishing in the top two during the league stage carries a significant advantage. Teams ranked 1st and 2nd get two shots at reaching the Final, while 3rd and 4th place teams must win every knockout game to survive.

How Playoff Qualification Works in TG20 League 2026

Since this is the inaugural season, fans new to the TG20 League may wonder how teams qualify for the knockout rounds. Here is a simple breakdown of the qualification criteria.

What Decides the Top 4?

Primarily, total points earned during the league stage determine team rankings. Subsequently, if two or more teams end on equal points, Net Run Rate (NRR) acts as the first tiebreaker.

In the event that NRR is also identical, the head-to-head record between the tied teams comes into play. Given that each team plays only seven league games, every single result matters throughout the competition.

Can a Team With More Wins Miss Out?

Theoretically, yes. Because No Result games award 1 point to both teams, a side with fewer wins but multiple washed-out matches could accumulate enough points to edge past a team that played all its games. However, this scenario rarely occurs in a single-venue tournament where one ground hosts every match.

TG20 League 2026 Venue: Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium

All 32 matches of the TG20 League 2026 take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium (RGICS) in Uppal, Hyderabad.

Specifically, this is the home ground of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and has a seating capacity of approximately 55,000 spectators. The stadium has hosted international matches, IPL finals, and ICC events, so the infrastructure is world-class.

Moreover, hosting every game at a single venue ensures consistent pitch and outfield conditions for all teams. As the tournament progresses, the pitch is likely to slow down, which could benefit spin-heavy sides in the later stages.
