How Points and NRR Work in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026

The format is simple, and it does not change no matter which group you look at.

  • A win earns 2 points
  • A loss earns 0 points
  • A tie or a no-result match earns 1 point each

Every team plays the other three sides in its group once. That means three group games each before the table gets finalised and the top two move on.

Net Run Rate as the Tiebreaker

When two or more teams finish with the same points, NRR decides who ranks higher. It is worked out as runs scored per over minus runs conceded per over, across every match a team has played.

Here is where it gets interesting, and it is worth understanding properly before you argue with a friend about the table. If a team gets bowled out before facing its full quota of overs, the rules still count the full 20 overs against them, not the fewer overs they actually used.

India’s win over Thailand shows this well. India scored 159 for 9 in their 20 overs. Thailand were bowled out for 65 in just 16.1 overs, but since they lost all ten wickets, the calculation treats that innings as a full 20-over spell. So India’s bowling rate becomes 65 runs from 20 overs, not 16.1. That is exactly why India’s NRR reads as a healthy +4.700 instead of something lower.

Format: How Teams Reach the Semi-Finals

This is the tenth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup and the first time it has ever been staged in the UAE. Eight teams, one venue, and a tight three-week window.

  • Group stage: August 28 to September 8, 12 matches total, each team plays 3 group games
  • Semi-final 1: September 10 (Group A winner vs Group B runner-up)
  • Semi-final 2: September 11 (Group B winner vs Group A runner-up)
  • Final: September 13

Every single match, right through to the final, is played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. There is no travel involved for any team this year, which should make for a fairly settled tournament once the pitch beds in.

Key Fixtures That Could Reshape the Table

A few matches on the calendar stand out as ones that will move the points table more than others.

India vs Pakistan on September 5 is the fixture every fan in India circles first. It also happens to be India’s last group game, so it could double up as a straight fight for the top Group A spot depending on how the earlier results go.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh on September 6 looks just as important for Group B. Sri Lanka already have a big NRR cushion, but a slip-up here would open the door for whoever is chasing them.

Thailand’s next test comes against Pakistan on September 1. A second straight loss would leave their semi-final hopes hanging entirely on beating Hong Kong later in the group.
