Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will field Finn Allen, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakravarthy, while Mumbai Indians (MI) rely on Ryan Rickelton, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma in Match 65 of IPL 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 7:30 PM IST.

Currently, KKR sit 2nd on the points table with seven wins from thirteen games and have won four of their last five matches. Meanwhile, MI are already eliminated from playoff contention with only four wins from twelve games.

Although KKR enter as strong favourites with a must-win motivation, MI beat KKR in the reverse fixture earlier this season by six wickets, chasing down 221 with five balls to spare. So, this is by no means a straightforward evening for the home side.

KKR Playing 11 Today

Because KKR beat Gujarat Titans convincingly in their previous match posting 247 for 2 in reply to GT’s 218 for 4 no changes are expected to their settled lineup. Accordingly, the combination of spin, power-hitting at the top, and Rinku Singh’s death-over expertise that has defined KKR’s revival this season remains intact.

Finn Allen is set to open once again and bring his explosive hitting to the powerplay. He hit a quickfire 37 in the reverse fixture at Wankhede at the start of the season, setting the tone for KKR’s 220-run total.

Furthermore, Sunil Narine opens alongside him and provides KKR with their best individual all-round contributor. Narine has now taken 12 wickets this season at a remarkable economy of 6.08 and chips in with crucial runs from No. 2. Their opening partnership in the last five home games has given KKR the explosive start they needed to post competitive totals.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane bats at No. 3 and brings experience and composure to the middle of the order. He smashed 67 off 40 in the reverse fixture at Wankhede, showing he can lead from the front. Additionally, Angkrish Raghuvanshi keeps wickets and has scored 319 runs in ten matches at an average of 39.88 and a strike rate of 138.69. He bats at No. 4. Cameron Green follows at No. 5 and has contributed 296 runs in ten matches at an average of 49.33 and a strike rate of 149.49. He also offers medium-pace bowling for two or three key overs.

Rinku Singh is KKR’s most reliable death-over finisher this season and bats at No. 6. He has been outstanding in the recent winning streak, building small but crucial partnerships under pressure. Moreover, Manish Pandey provides experienced batting depth at No. 7. Anukul Roy and Sunil Narine handle the spin bowling in the middle overs. Meanwhile, Kartik Tyagi and Varun Chakravarthy are the two most dangerous bowling options Tyagi leads KKR with 14 wickets in nine matches and Chakravarthy has taken wickets in four consecutive appearances. Saurabh Dubey completes the bowling lineup.

MI Playing 11 Today

Since Mumbai Indians have already been eliminated from the playoffs, the management has made changes and experimented with the squad in recent games. Consequently, the lineup for Match 65 is less settled than usual. However, MI beat PBKS in their last game by five wickets, with Jasprit Bumrah leading from the front and Tilak Varma hitting a match-winning 75. So, there is still pride and individual performance to play for.

Rohit Sharma returns to open alongside Ryan Rickelton, who has been MI’s standout performer this season with 340 runs in eight matches at an average of 48.57 and a strike rate of 197.67. Rohit scored a brilliant 78 off 38 balls in the reverse fixture at Wankhede, stitching an 80-run powerplay stand with Rickelton. Furthermore, that opening partnership is one of the few things that has worked consistently for MI this season when both are available and firing together.

Suryakumar Yadav comes in at No. 3 and remains MI’s most dangerous middle-order batter on batting surfaces. Additionally, Tilak Varma bats at No. 4 with 316 runs in ten matches at an average of 39.5 and a strike rate of 165.44. He is in excellent form right now after his 75 against PBKS. Sherfane Rutherford provides aggressive power-hitting at No. 5. Captain Hardik Pandya bats at No. 6 and scored an unbeaten 18 off 11 balls to seal the reverse fixture victory. Will Jacks and Raj Bawa add lower-order depth and batting flexibility.

On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah is MI’s most important weapon. He has already proven himself at Eden Gardens he conceded just 35 runs from four overs in the reverse fixture even when KKR posted 220. Moreover, Trent Boult provides left-arm swing at the other end in the powerplay. AM Ghazanfar has taken 13 wickets in eight matches this season at an economy of 9.63 and is MI’s most consistent wicket-taker in the middle overs. Corbin Bosch is a new addition to the side and has already picked up 7 wickets in three matches at an economy of 8.80. Shardul Thakur took four wickets in MI’s last game and rounds off a more balanced-looking attack than MI had earlier this season.

Impact Player Picks for Both Sides

KKR Impact Sub: Varun Chakravarthy / Matheesha Pathirana

Since Eden Gardens offers turn and grip for mystery spinners in the middle overs, Varun Chakravarthy is KKR’s standout impact option. He has taken wickets in four successive matches. Specifically, his variations can trouble MI’s middle order of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, who both look to sweep and slog-sweep spin. On the other hand, Matheesha Pathirana is a high-upside pace option his slinging action and death-over yorkers can be very hard to read under Eden Gardens’ lights, and he is an additional option if KKR need an extra bowling threat.

MI Impact Sub: Raj Bawa / Shardul Thakur

Similarly, MI’s primary impact option is Raj Bawa, who offers batting power in the middle order if MI lose early wickets. Furthermore, Shardul Thakur is the stronger bowling sub after his four-wicket haul against PBKS. Because Eden Gardens tends to reward seam-bowling variations early in the match, Thakur’s ability to bowl cutters and change pace makes him a very useful sub if MI decide to bolster their bowling lineup.

Head-to-Head Record: KKR vs MI

Mumbai Indians hold a dominant all-time head-to-head advantage over Kolkata Knight Riders. Out of 36 completed IPL matches between the two sides, MI have won 25 while KKR have managed just 11. Furthermore, MI have also won the two most recent meetings between these sides in IPL 2026.

Additionally, MI have the better head-to-head at Eden Gardens in the last two seasons despite KKR’s home advantage. Specifically, MI’s bowling when Bumrah is at his best has proven it can contain even KKR’s big-hitting top order at this ground.

Pitch Report & Weather Forecast

Firstly, Eden Gardens is the largest stadium in India and one of the most batting-friendly venues in IPL 2026. The surface has been exceptionally flat this season.

KKR themselves posted 247 for 2 against GT on May 16 here, which is already the highest team total at Eden Gardens in IPL history. Furthermore, the average first-innings score at Eden Gardens in IPL 2026 has risen to 202 runs, significantly above the all-time average of 165–178.

Secondly, the pitch offers pace and true bounce in the early overs, which helps seamers like Bumrah and Boult swing the ball under the lights. Besides that, the surface slows down significantly in overs 7–15, which is where Narine and Chakravarthy take over for KKR. The most critical factor tonight, however, is the dew.

The humidity in Kolkata on May 20 is expected to reach 82% during the match. As a result, spinners will struggle to grip the ball in the second innings, and the chasing team will benefit greatly from the wet outfield and slippery ball. Consequently, winning the toss is important here and both captains are likely to bowl first.

The weather at Eden Gardens on May 20 is expected to be hazy and warm with temperatures around 30.4°C and humidity at approximately 82%. There is no rain threat. Therefore, a full 40-over contest is confirmed. The dew will be significant from around the 12th over of the second innings, strongly benefiting the chasing team tonight.

Match Prediction: Who Wins Today?

KKR are the clear favourites here. They are playing at home, they have won four of their last five matches, and they posted a ground-record 247 for 2 in their last game at Eden Gardens. Furthermore, their spin combination of Narine and Chakravarthy at this venue is one of the most dangerous in the tournament. Additionally, the playoff pressure gives KKR an enormous extra motivation that MI simply cannot match tonight.

On the other hand, MI are not a team that can be written off completely. Jasprit Bumrah in the powerplay is genuinely the most dangerous bowler in IPL 2026, and Ryan Rickelton’s ability to play high-risk, high-reward cricket from the first ball means MI are never out of a chase. Moreover, Tilak Varma is in outstanding current form after his 75 against PBKS. However, MI’s bowling economy of 10.68 this season is the worst in the tournament, and conceding 200+ at Eden Gardens against KKR’s lineup would make even Bumrah’s best efforts irrelevant.

As for the toss, the heavy dew expected from around 9 PM makes chasing the logical call for both captains. Ultimately, KKR are predicted to win and take a crucial step towards sealing their top-four playoff berth.

Final Word

To sum up, the KKR vs MI Match 65 is a contest between a desperate home side pushing for playoff qualification and an eliminated MI outfit with nothing to lose but individual pride. If Jasprit Bumrah gets the ball to swing early in the powerplay, he can expose KKR’s aggressive but vulnerable top order even at Eden Gardens.

Otherwise, if Finn Allen and Narine get going from the first over against an MI bowling attack that has leaked runs all season, KKR could post another massive total and make this game all but over by the halfway stage. Either way, the 82% humidity, the dew, and the pure stakes of KKR’s playoff push make this Wednesday night in Kolkata one of the most important nights of their season so far.
