Punjab Kings can still qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, but their path is incredibly narrow.

After six consecutive losses following an unbeaten 6-0 start, PBKS sit fourth on the IPL 2026 points table with 13 points from 13 matches.

They have just one game remaining against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on May 23.

A win takes them to 15 points, but even that may not be enough. So, Shreyas Iyer’s side now needs both a victory and favourable results from other matches to sneak into the top four.

Where Do PBKS Stand on the IPL 2026 Points Table?

As of May 18, 2026, Punjab Kings are hanging on to the fourth spot. However, five teams are bunched between 11 and 14 points, making this the tightest IPL playoff race in years.

Here is the updated IPL 2026 points table after Match 62:

PosTeamPlayedWonLostPointsNRR
1RCB139418+1.065
2GT138516+0.400
3SRH127514+0.331
4PBKS136713+0.227
5CSK126612+0.027
6RR126612+0.027
7DC136712-0.871
8KKR125711-0.038
9MI (E)12488-0.504
10LSG (E)12488-0.701

RCB have already qualified for the playoffs with 18 points. Meanwhile, GT (16) and SRH (14) are in strong positions. The real battle is for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Interestingly, CSK, RR, and DC are all level on 12 points, while KKR trail at 11. Any of these teams could potentially leapfrog PBKS in the final week.

PBKS Qualification Scenarios: What Needs to Happen?

The equation is straightforward for Punjab Kings. They must beat LSG on May 23 and then pray that other results go their way. Here is a breakdown of every scenario:

ScenarioOutcome for PBKS
PBKS beat LSG (15 points)Qualification possible if CSK, RR, and KKR do not all reach 16. NRR becomes the tiebreaker. PBKS hold an NRR of +0.227, which gives them a slight edge over KKR and DC.
PBKS lose to LSG (13 points)Season over. At 13 points, PBKS cannot finish in the top four regardless of other results. Eliminated from IPL 2026.
CSK win both remaining matches (reach 16)CSK jump ahead of PBKS even if PBKS beat LSG. This is the most damaging scenario for Punjab Kings.
RR win both remaining matches (reach 16)RR overtake PBKS on points. Another blow for PBKS qualification chances.
KKR win both remaining matches (reach 15)KKR tie PBKS on 15 points if both win their remaining games. NRR decides who qualifies, and PBKS currently hold a better NRR than KKR.
SRH lose both remaining matches (stay at 14)Opens up a clearer path for PBKS at 15 points, as one fewer team reaches 16.

The Best-Case Scenario for PBKS

If PBKS beat LSG and reach 15 points, their chances improve significantly if SRH lose both remaining games. In that case, only one other team besides PBKS would reach 16.

Additionally, if KKR also win both their matches, they tie PBKS at 15 points. However, PBKS hold a better NRR (+0.227 vs -0.038), which gives them the tiebreaker advantage.

In short, the dream scenario for Punjab requires: a PBKS win, at least one CSK or RR loss, and SRH not running away with both remaining fixtures.

The Worst-Case Scenario for PBKS

If PBKS lose to LSG, they finish on 13 points. That is simply not enough to qualify.

At 13 points, too many teams would finish above them regardless of other results. Punjab Kings would be eliminated from IPL 2026, ending what started as the season’s most dominant campaign.

Which Teams Can Overtake PBKS in the Playoff Race?

Even if PBKS win their final match, they are not safe. Several teams still have two games remaining and can reach 16 points. Here is a look at PBKS’s direct competitors:

TeamPointsPlayedRemainingCan They Overtake PBKS?
CSK12122Yes. Two wins take CSK to 16, which puts them ahead of PBKS on 15.
RR12122Yes. Two wins take RR to 16 and push PBKS out of top four.
KKR11122Yes, but needs help. Max 15 points; tied with PBKS, but PBKS have better NRR.
DC12131Unlikely. Max 14 points. Only qualifies if multiple teams collapse.

As a result, the biggest threat comes from CSK and RR. Both have two games left and can reach 16 points with two wins. If both manage that, PBKS on 15 would be knocked out of the top four.

On the other hand, CSK face SRH (at home) and GT (away), which are tough fixtures. Similarly, RR play LSG (home) and MI (away). So not all of these wins are guaranteed.

What Do IPL History and Numbers Tell Us?

Understanding IPL playoff qualification thresholds adds context to PBKS’s situation. The magic number has typically been 16 points in the 10-team era:

PointsQualification ChancesHistorical Precedent
16+Almost guaranteedSafe mark in IPL 2022, 2023, and 2025 (ESPNcricinfo)
14-15Risky, depends on NRRRCB qualified with 14 in IPL 2024 due to superior NRR
12-13Extremely unlikelySRH in 2019 qualified with 12 points, only instance ever

With PBKS maxing out at 15 points, they fall below the traditional safe mark. This means qualification is possible but far from certain. It depends entirely on other teams slipping up.

For reference, RCB qualified in IPL 2024 with just 14 points because their NRR was superior to three other teams on the same tally. So stranger things have happened in the IPL.

How PBKS Went from 6-0 to Six Consecutive Losses

This is, without exaggeration, one of the most dramatic collapses in IPL history. Punjab Kings started IPL 2026 like a team on a mission.

As a result, they notched six wins in their first six completed matches. Additionally, they set record run chases and posted the highest powerplay strike rate in the tournament (180.67). They were untouchable.

Then everything fell apart. Here is a match-by-match look at the PBKS losing streak:

MatchOpponentWhat Went Wrong
Match 8RRFirst loss after going 6-0. Aura of invincibility shattered overnight.
Match 9CSKDeath bowling exposed at Chepauk. Two losses in a row, early warning signs.
Match 10SRHSunrisers’ batting power overwhelmed PBKS. Three consecutive losses.
Match 11DCFailed to defend a competitive total. Death-over economy climbing past 10 RPO.
Match 12MIMumbai chased 201 with a ball to spare. Tilak Varma’s 75 off 33 sealed it.
Match 13RCBRCB scored 222/4, PBKS managed 199/8. Six straight losses confirmed.

What Went Wrong for Punjab Kings?

Consequently, the collapse has not been caused by one single issue. Instead, multiple problems surfaced simultaneously, and the team could not fix any of them fast enough.

Death bowling became a crisis. During the losing streak, PBKS bowlers consistently leaked runs in the final overs. Opponents started believing they could chase any total against Punjab in the death.

Fielding intensity dropped. Catches went down at crucial moments. Shashank Singh dropped KL Rahul during the DC match, and Rahul went on to score an unbeaten 152.

Over-reliance on aggression. PBKS hold the record for the most successful 200-plus chases in T20 cricket (11), but also the most defeats in 200-plus chases (10). When confidence dropped, the all-attack approach became self-destructive.

NRR took a massive hit. Their NRR dropped from above +1.3 during the winning streak to +0.227 after six losses. That cushion, which once looked insurmountable, is now razor-thin.

Why Net Run Rate Could Decide PBKS’s Fate

Net Run Rate (NRR) becomes the ultimate tiebreaker when teams finish on equal points. For PBKS, this is both good news and bad news.

Furthermore, even after six losses, PBKS’s NRR of +0.227 is still positive. That is better than CSK (+0.027), RR (+0.027), DC (-0.871), and KKR (-0.038). So, in a tiebreaker situation at 14 or 15 points, PBKS would likely finish ahead of these teams.

However, the NRR has been falling sharply with every loss. As a result, if PBKS lose to LSG by a big margin, their NRR could slide further and even that tiebreaker advantage could vanish.

During their six-win streak, PBKS had built a comfortable NRR above +1.3. That has evaporated by nearly a full point in just seven matches. It is a sobering reminder of how quickly things change in T20 cricket.

PBKS IPL Playoff History: A Franchise That Knows Heartbreak

Punjab Kings have not exactly been regular visitors to the IPL playoffs. In 18 previous seasons, they have qualified just three times.

In 2014, they topped the league table under George Bailey with 11 wins in 14 matches. Glenn Maxwell was named Player of the Tournament. Yet they lost the final to KKR despite posting 199.

In 2025, under Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, they topped the league table again. But once again, they fell short in the final, losing to RCB by six runs while chasing 191.

Moreover, there is a cruel pattern here. PBKS have a habit of dominating the league stage and then stumbling when it matters most. The 2026 collapse, though, is different. This time, they might not even make it to the knockout stage.

For a franchise that has finished as wooden spooners three times (2010, 2015, 2016), another failed season would be a tough pill to swallow, especially after the promise of that 6-0 start.

Conclusion: PBKS Still Alive in Qualification Race after Match 62 of IPL 2026

PBKS’s IPL 2026 playoff dream is alive by the thinnest of margins. They have gone from table-toppers to the brink of elimination in seven matches.

The LSG fixture on May 23 is now a must-win, but even a victory only gets them to 15 points. After that, it is out of their hands.

Nevertheless, cricket is full of surprises. And if any team in IPL history has shown that anything can happen, it is Punjab Kings. The same chaos that caused their collapse could just as easily save them.
