Punjab Kings have rewritten T20 cricket history. On April 25, 2026, PBKS chased down 265 runs against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, completing the highest successful run chase in both IPL and T20 cricket history.

They broke their own previous record of 262 against KKR in 2024. Prabhsimran Singh (76 off 26), Priyansh Arya (43 off 17), and captain Shreyas Iyer (71* off 36) powered the chase, wrapping it up in 18.5 overs with seven balls to spare.

How Did Punjab Kings Pull Off the Impossible?

DC posted a mammoth 264/2 after batting first. KL Rahul smashed a career-best unbeaten 152, the third-highest individual score in IPL history and the highest by an Indian batter. Nitish Rana added 91 in a devastating partnership. At the halfway mark, almost everyone assumed the game was over.

Priyansh Arya launched a six off the very first ball of the chase. He and Prabhsimran Singh tore into DC’s bowling from ball one, putting on a 126-run opening stand in just 6.5 overs. The powerplay score read 116/0, the highest powerplay total of IPL 2026 and among the highest ever.

Prabhsimran led the carnage with nine fours and five sixes before falling for 76. After three quick wickets briefly slowed things down, Shreyas Iyer took charge. The PBKS captain smashed three fours and seven sixes in his unbeaten 71, finishing the chase with clinical precision.

PBKS now own the top two spots on this list. They’re the only franchise to have chased down 250-plus twice in IPL history. Four of the top seven entries have come since 2024, showing just how dramatically T20 batting has shifted.

Why Are Big Run Chases Becoming Common?

Four factors explain this trend.

First, the Impact Player Rule allows teams to substitute an extra specialist batter during the chase. That gives the batting side more depth and reduces the risk of tail-end collapses against big totals.

Second, powerplay batting has changed completely. Teams now routinely score 60-80 in the first six overs while chasing. PBKS scored 116 in the powerplay against DC, keeping the required rate manageable despite a 265-run target.

Third, flatter pitches and smaller boundaries at venues like Wankhede, Chinnaswamy, and Hyderabad have tilted the balance heavily towards batters. Bowlers have fewer places to hide.

Finally, there’s a psychological shift. After PBKS chased 262 in 2024 and SRH chased 247 in 2025, teams no longer see 220-plus totals as safe. Aggressive intent from ball one has become the default chasing strategy across the league.

What Does This Mean for PBKS’ IPL 2026 Campaign?

This win takes PBKS to six wins from seven matches, with one washout in Kolkata. They’re comfortably positioned near the top of the points table and playing the most fearless cricket in the tournament.

Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, the Kings have built an identity around aggressive chasing. Prabhsimran, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Marcus Stoinis, and Nehal Wadhera give them batting firepower at every position. Add Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal to the bowling mix, and this squad looks balanced enough to go deep into the playoffs.

From perennial underachievers to T20 cricket’s greatest chasers, PBKS have flipped the script entirely. And they did it by breaking their own record. That’s a flex only Punjab Kings can claim.
