Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma is unlikely to play in the team’s next two matches of IPL 2026.

The veteran batter is currently dealing with a hamstring injury sustained during a recent game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium.

Injury And Medical Scans

Rohit suffered the injury on Sunday while batting during MI’s chase of 241 runs. He was on 19 runs off 13 balls when he appeared to tweak his hamstring. After a brief discussion with the team physio, he was forced to retire hurt and did not return to the field.

The 38-year-old underwent medical scans on Monday. Reports indicate that while there is no major tear, he is suffering from a strain. To avoid making the injury worse, the team management is expected to give him rest for at least the next two fixtures. Rohit also missed the team’s practice session on Tuesday evening.

Impact on Mumbai Indians

The absence of Rohit Sharma is a significant blow to Mumbai Indians, who are currently struggling in the bottom half of the points table. Rohit has been the team’s leading run-scorer this season, with 137 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 165.06.

In his absence, MI may consider moving Suryakumar Yadav up the order or bringing in Quinton de Kock to open alongside Ryan Rickelton. The team has only won one match out of four so far and is desperate for a win to stay in the race for the playoffs.

Upcoming Matches

Rohit is expected to miss the following games:

  • April 16: Against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
  • April 19: Against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow.

The team management hopes he will be fit for the high-profile match against Chennai Super Kings on April 23.

Punjab Kings are currently in second place on the points table, making this a very difficult challenge for the Mumbai side without their star opener.
