Phil Salt is fit and has resumed training with the RCB squad, but his place in tonight’s playing XI for Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans remains uncertain.
RCB captain Rajat Patidar confirmed during the pre-match press conference that Salt is “under observation from the doctor” and a final call will come before the toss.
The England batter missed eight consecutive matches after injuring his left finger on April 18 and flew back to the UK for treatment. He returned to the RCB camp in Dharamshala ahead of the playoffs.
What Happened to Phil Salt?
Salt injured his left finger while fielding during RCB’s match against Delhi Capitals on April 18, 2026. The injury was serious enough to require scans and specialist treatment in England, forcing him out for over a month.

Before the injury, Salt was in terrific form. He played six matches this season and scored 202 runs at an impressive strike rate, giving RCB explosive starts alongside Virat Kohli at the top of the order. His absence left a massive void in the batting lineup that RCB had to fill mid-season.
Who Has Been Replacing Salt?
Initially, Jacob Bethell stepped in as the overseas opener. However, Bethell himself suffered an injury soon after, leaving RCB scrambling for options.
Venkatesh Iyer eventually took over the opening slot and made it his own. In RCB’s final league match against SRH, Iyer played an exceptional knock that cemented his case for a Qualifier 1 spot. That performance is exactly why tonight’s selection is complicated.
If Salt is fully fit, RCB get their first-choice opener back. But dropping Iyer after a match-winning innings in a must-win game feels harsh. Patidar hinted at a pitch-dependent decision, saying, “We will look at the wicket and decide.”
What Did Captain Patidar Say About Salt’s Fitness?
Patidar was careful with his words. He confirmed the positive news but didn’t commit to picking Salt tonight.
“Salt is fit. He is under observation from the doctor. He has been participating in a few drills, but we haven’t decided on our playing XI yet. We will look at the wicket and decide,” Patidar said at the press conference.
That answer suggests RCB want to see how the Dharamshala surface looks before making a final call. If the pitch favours pace and bounce, Salt’s aggressive style could be the difference. If it turns, Iyer’s ability to handle spin might get the nod.
What’s at Stake in RCB vs GT Qualifier 1?
Everything. The winner goes directly to the IPL 2026 Final in Ahmedabad on May 31. The loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2 on May 29 in New Chandigarh.
RCB finished top of the points table with 18 points (nine wins from 14 matches), the best league-stage campaign in franchise history. They’re the defending champions after winning their maiden IPL title in 2025, and tonight’s match in Dharamshala is their fastest route to a second consecutive final.
Gujarat Titans finished second and have been the most consistent bowling side all season. Their pace attack led by Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Prasidh Krishna has the best combined average in IPL 2026.
Whether Salt opens alongside Kohli or watches from the dugout, RCB know one thing for certain: the next two hours before the toss will define how they approach the biggest game of their season.
