How Does the Eliminator Work?

The Eliminator is the most ruthless match in the IPL playoff structure. Here is how it works.

The teams finishing 3rd and 4th in the league stage points table face off. The loser is immediately eliminated from the tournament. No second chance, no Qualifier 2 route.

The winner advances to Qualifier 2 on 29 May at the same venue (New Chandigarh), where they face the Qualifier 1 loser for a spot in the Final.

For the winning team, there is a significant advantage: they play Qualifier 2 at the same ground just two days later. Familiar pitch, familiar conditions, familiar dressing room.

Eliminator Ticket Sale Timeline

The BCCI has confirmed a phased sale model for all IPL 2026 playoff tickets.

The Eliminator shares sale dates with Qualifier 1. Both go on RuPay pre-sale on 20 May and general sale on 21 May. If you want tickets for both, be ready to book for two matches in the same session.

Budget stands will sell out quickly. At 38,000 capacity, New Chandigarh is not the smallest venue, but playoff demand is on a different level compared to regular season fixtures.

Expected Ticket Prices for the Eliminator at New Chandigarh

Official playoff pricing has not been announced yet. However, based on PBKS league-stage matches at this same venue, here is a reliable estimate.

PBKS home matches at New Chandigarh ranged from Rs 2,750 to Rs 20,000 during the league phase. Playoff tickets are typically 20-40% higher than league matches.

Seating CategoryExpected Price (Rs)Tier
Upper Tier General StandsRs 3,500 – Rs 4,500Budget
Mid-Range / Gallery StandsRs 5,000 – Rs 7,500Mid-Range
Premium Lower TierRs 8,000 – Rs 12,000Premium

Note: Final pricing will be confirmed once the sale goes live on District. Expect prices at the higher end of these ranges given the do-or-die nature of an Eliminator.

District charges a convenience fee of approximately 10-12% inclusive of GST on top of the base price.

New International Cricket Stadium: Venue Overview

The New International Cricket Stadium (officially Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium) is located in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, near Mohali.

With a seating capacity of approximately 38,000, it is one of the newest cricket venues in India. The stadium has served as Punjab Kings’ home ground since IPL 2024 and has hosted 14+ IPL matches.

The pitch is known for being batting-friendly, with balanced results for teams batting first and second. Expect a high-scoring Eliminator.

How to Reach the Stadium

  • By air: Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) is approximately 25-30 km away. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other cities.
  • By train: Chandigarh Junction is the nearest major station, about 20 km from the venue.
  • By road: New Chandigarh is approximately 260 km from Delhi (4-5 hours) and 30 km from Chandigarh city centre.
  • Parking: No parking available at the venue. Use public transport or pre-book a cab.

Match Day Tips for the Eliminator At New Chandigarh

  • Arrive by 4:30 PM. Gates open three hours early. An Eliminator draws bigger crowds and higher emotions than any league match.
  • Charge your phone to 100%. Your M-Ticket QR code is your only entry pass. Power banks are banned inside.
  • Download your M-Ticket before leaving your hotel. Mobile signals inside the stadium weaken with 38,000 fans. Have your QR code ready offline.
  • Carry a valid government ID. Security checks your identity at the gate alongside your M-Ticket.
  • No outside food, large bags, cameras, or sharp objects. Standard IPL security rules apply.
  • No parking at the stadium. Pre-book a cab from Chandigarh or Mohali. Roads around Mullanpur get congested on match nights.
  • Late May in New Chandigarh is hot. Temperatures can reach 35-38 degrees Celsius even in the evening. Carry sunglasses, a cap, and stay hydrated.
  • Book accommodation early. Stay in Chandigarh city or Mohali (both 20-30 km) and cab to the venue. Hotels fill up fast during playoffs.
