Chennai Super Kings have moved swiftly to address their mounting injury concerns, signing right-arm pacer Akash Madhwal as a replacement for the injured Ayush Mhatre ahead of their marquee IPL 2026 encounter against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday evening.

The signing was officially confirmed just hours before the high-voltage MI vs CSK fixture.

Mhatre’s Promising Season Cut Short

Mhatre, who captained India’s U19 World Cup-winning side, had been in outstanding form at the top of the order, registering two half-centuries across six matches at a strike rate of 177.87, amassing 201 runs.

However, his campaign came to an abrupt halt after he sustained a left hamstring injury while batting in Match 27 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Who Is Akash Madhwal?

Madhwal, 32, arrives at CSK with solid IPL pedigree. He has featured in 17 IPL matches, picking up 23 wickets, and has a memorable five-wicket haul to his name recording stunning figures of 5/5 in his debut season for MI in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants.

Notably, Madhwal had gone unsold at the IPL 2026 auction before CSK came calling in their hour of need.

Injury Crisis Deepens for Chennai

The signing comes at a particularly challenging time for Chennai, with their bowling department hit hard by multiple injuries. Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out for the season with a quadriceps injury, and the absence of overseas pacer Nathan Ellis has left the squad noticeably thin on pace bowling options.

Madhwal has joined the five-time champions for a fee of ₹30 lakh.

Eyes on Wankhede Showdown

CSK will hope the experienced campaigner can provide immediate impact as they look to arrest a poor run of form. The Super Kings head into Thursday’s contest having suffered four defeats this season, including a 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad most recently, while MI will be buoyed by a strong win over Gujarat Titans powered by a Tilak Varma century.
