Shreyas Iyer will replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain starting with the upcoming Ireland and England tours in late June. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will announce the squad on Saturday, June 6, and Suryakumar is likely to be dropped from the squad entirely.
In an equally massive development, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to receive his maiden senior India call-up, which would make him the youngest player selected for the Indian men’s team since Sachin Tendulkar.
The changes are part of BCCI’s long-term planning for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand the same year.
Why Is Suryakumar Yadav Being Replaced?
The numbers tell the story clearly.
During the T20 World Cup 2026, Suryakumar managed just 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72. His only notable knock came against the USA in India’s opener. After that, he failed to score a single T20I fifty for the rest of the tournament.
His IPL 2026 campaign was even worse. Playing for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar scored 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54. For a batter whose entire reputation rests on attacking intent and strike rate, those numbers fell well below his own standards.

At 35, the selectors clearly feel the team needs a younger, long-term leadership option heading into the next T20 World Cup cycle. This mirrors last year’s decision to replace Rohit Sharma as ODI captain after the Champions Trophy win. Two consecutive years, two World Cup-winning captains replaced before the next assignment. The BCCI’s forward-planning approach is now unmistakable.
Why Shreyas Iyer as T20I Captain?
Iyer hasn’t played a T20I since December 2023. That’s nearly two-and-a-half years without an international T20 appearance. So why him?
The answer lies in his IPL captaincy record. Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, guided Delhi Capitals to the 2020 IPL final, and took Punjab Kings to the IPL 2026 final in his very first season with the franchise. Three finals in six years with three different teams is a track record that speaks for itself.
His batting has been equally consistent. In IPL 2025, Iyer scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07. In IPL 2026, he added 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81. Both seasons he anchored his team’s middle order while making aggressive tactical decisions as captain.
The reason he missed out on T20Is wasn’t poor form. It was squad composition. Suryakumar and Tilak Varma occupied the middle-order slots, leaving no room for Iyer regardless of his IPL performances. Now that Suryakumar is being moved on, Iyer steps into both the batting spot and the captaincy simultaneously.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Actually Debut?
If selected, Sooryavanshi will become the youngest player picked for India’s senior men’s team since Sachin Tendulkar was called up at age 16 in 1989.
The case for selection is overwhelming. Sooryavanshi won the IPL 2026 Orange Cap with 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30. He also won awards for Most Sixes (65, breaking Chris Gayle’s all-time record), Highest Strike Rate, and MVP of the tournament. Before that, he smashed 175 in the U-19 World Cup final against England.
However, breaking into the playing XI is a different challenge. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan have all performed at the international level and delivered strong IPL seasons of their own. The competition for batting spots is fierce, and the team management may keep Sooryavanshi on the bench for the first few matches while he settles into the senior environment.
Before joining the senior squad, Sooryavanshi will first represent India A in the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka involving Afghanistan from June 9 to 21.
What’s India’s T20I Schedule for the Ireland and England Tours?
The squad announcement on Saturday, June 6 covers both legs of the UK tour:
Ireland T20Is
- June 26: 1st T20I in Belfast
- June 28: 2nd T20I in Belfast
England T20Is
- July 1: 1st T20I at Chester-le-Street
- July 3: 2nd T20I at Manchester
- July 5: 3rd T20I at Nottingham
- July 8: 4th T20I at Bristol
- July 11: 5th T20I at Southampton
That’s seven T20Is in 16 days across two countries. Plenty of opportunities for Iyer to stamp his authority as captain and for Sooryavanshi to potentially earn his first cap.
What Does This Mean for Indian Cricket’s Future?
The selectors are sending a clear message: past achievements don’t guarantee future spots.
Suryakumar Yadav led India to a T20 World Cup title just three months ago. Now he’s being dropped. Rohit Sharma won the Champions Trophy in 2025 and was replaced as ODI captain before the next series. The BCCI’s willingness to make ruthless calls in pursuit of long-term planning is now a pattern, not an exception.
With the 2028 LA Olympics introducing cricket and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand happening the same year, India need a captain who can lead through a full cycle. At 31, Shreyas Iyer fits that timeline perfectly. At 15, Sooryavanshi represents the next generation entirely.
The squad announcement on Saturday will confirm both moves. Indian cricket is turning the page, and it’s doing it faster than anyone expected.
