The spotlight is firmly on MS Dhoni as Chennai Super Kings prepare to face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians on April 23, 2026, at the Wankhede Stadium.

With CSK struggling for consistency this season, all eyes are on whether their legendary former captain will finally make his return after missing every match so far due to injury.

While recent training sessions have raised hopes, the team is yet to confirm his availability, making the toss-time decision one of the most anticipated moments ahead of this high-voltage clash.

What the Team Said

CSK bowling coach Eric Simons gave a straightforward update ahead of the match.

“A decision on him will be taken by him and the medical staff, if he is absolutely ready to go,” Simons said.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also addressed the situation at a pre-match event.

“He is getting there slowly. Maybe he might feature in the next game or the one after that. He will be back one day, definitely,” Gaikwad said.

Both statements point to the same thing: no confirmation yet, but the door is open.

His Likely Role if He Plays

If Dhoni gets the green light, CSK are expected to use him as an Impact Player. This would allow the team to protect his fitness while still using his experience and finishing ability in the lower order. Sanju Samson has been keeping wickets in his absence.

CSK’s Difficult Season So Far

CSK are not in a strong position right now. They have won only two of their six matches and sit eighth on the IPL 2026 points table. Their last game ended in a 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Adding to their problems, star batter Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament. Pacer Spencer Johnson could make his CSK debut tonight following Khaleel Ahmed’s injury.
