How the FIFA World Cup 2026 Points System Works

Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. This standard structure applies across all 12 groups. Furthermore, each team plays three group-stage games, which means a maximum of nine points is available before knockouts. Therefore, group winners typically need six or more points to top their pool comfortably.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Tiebreaker Rules

When two or more teams finish level on points, FIFA applies the following tiebreaker criteria in order. Importantly, the rules differ slightly for ranking the eight best third-placed teams.

Group Stage Tiebreakers (in order)

1. Greater number of points obtained in all group matches

2. Superior goal difference across all group matches

3. Greater number of goals scored in all group matches

4. Greater number of points obtained in head-to-head matches between the tied teams

5. Superior goal difference in head-to-head matches between the tied teams

6. Greater number of goals scored in head-to-head matches between the tied teams

7. Fair play score, based on yellow and red cards received

8. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee

For ranking the best third-placed teams, FIFA applies a simpler order: points first, then goal difference, then goals scored, then the team conduct score, and finally FIFA World Ranking position.

Round of 32: The New Knockout Format Explained

32 of the 48 teams advance to the knockout stage. Specifically, the top two from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, which accounts for 24 spots. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also progress, filling out the bracket. This brand-new format adds one extra knockout round compared to the 32-team World Cup.

As a result, even one bad result will not necessarily end a team’s tournament. For instance, a third-placed side can still survive if their points and goal difference rank in the top eight across all groups. Consequently, the FIFA World Cup 2026 Points Table matters in ways it never did before, since fine margins between third-placed teams can decide who packs and who plays on.
